Health Education for the Public: 'Improving Personal Care Promoting Health'

The health education activity entitled 'Improving personal care - promoting health' was held on 18 April 2003 at Lok Fu Estate in Kowloon. This activity was co-organised by the Hong Kong College of Chinese Medicinal Nursing, the Hong Kong Society for Nursing Education and the Housing Authority. This community-based health promotion activity was in response to the outbreak of Severe Acute Repiratory Syndrome (SARS) in Hong Kong. Hong Kong citizens need to know more about improving their personal and home hygiene, thus promoting their own health and preventing the spread of infectious disease. Hundreds of residents from Lok Fu Estate and nearby housing estates attended the event.

The activities included health talks, demonstrations, quizzes and booths for health consultation and poster display. Contents included: taking body temperature, wearing mask, washing hands, promoting home hygiene and principles in using Traditional Chinese Medicine. The health talks were given by members of the Society and nurse specialists who also provided the participants with individual health consultation. Nursing students from the universities had also actively contributed to the event.

This activity was well supported by the government officials and politicians who officiated at the Opening Ceremony. Guests include: Dr. Patrick C.P. Ho, Secretary for Home Affairs; Mr. Ma Li, Member of the National People's Congress, and Mr. Tsoi Pui Yuen, Deputy Director General of Education, Science and Technology Department, Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong SAR.
